About Karen Cummings

Karen Cummings This website represents my interest in multiple artistic media. I have been a representational artist for many years. Several of the paintings you’ll see here show my efforts to paint with realism and attention to detail. I find satisfaction and challenge while using oils, watercolors and pencil to develop these works.

The other paintings represent my search for a more abstract, artistic edge. All types are inspired by the natural world…but with different results.

Like many people I doodle when I sit with a pencil in my hand. Though I had never used my curving doodles for anything, I kept my favorites tucked away, just in case. A few months ago it occurred to me that I could use them as foundational elements for some new, fresh paintings.

Someone once noted that mankind builds chiefly with straight lines and angles. But when observing the living, natural world we see it filled with curves: fern fronds, seashells, vine tendrils, snail shells and palm trees, to name a few.

Using only pencils, (erasers!) and watercolor paint, I’ve attempted to mimic the beauty and fluidity of these mathematically precise curves and spirals. The time I devoted to this work and the difficulty of the process brought many questions to mind…questions and issues that may have haunted humanity since life on earth began.

So I’ve included in the abstract watercolors some questions and quotations from ancient wisdom literature that challenge and inspire me. They also allow me to try my hand at calligraphy again. A few years ago I stepped away from doing calligraphy because I saw the computer age replacing the practice with a plethora of fonts and easy word processing. Now I realize it is more important than ever to uphold the tradition of hand-lettering….along with the tradition and wisdom of contemplating life.
